Industry Training
The infrastructure sector in New Zealand offers a wide range of employment opportunities. The industry is responsible for creating and maintaining the foundations New Zealand’s transport network is built on — roads, bridges, airport runways, railway tracks — everything that keeps this country moving.
The industry offers a huge range of exciting and rewarding career prospects, including opportunities for construction workers, drivers, technicians, equipment operators, engineers and managers – the list goes on and on. If you are able to work in a team, are reliable and honest and have a positive attitude, you are ready to join our industry!
Roading New Zealand member companies and organisations are normally keen to hear from potential employees. A lot of our members have specific career paths available for the right people.
We work closely with InfraTrain, the industry training organisation (ITO), to enable industry employees to attain national qualifications that recognise their skills and knowledge.
InfraTrain qualifications are completed through on-job training, rather than in the classroom, so learning can be scheduled to fit into the working day. Trainees are normally assigned a mentor who will provide support and guidance throughout the qualification. The trainee collects evidence of the skills and knowledge they have acquired in a workbook, which is then verified and assessed against the competency standards in the qualification.
If you are already employed in the industry, your employer will most likely have introduced you to the training options open to you. Your InfraTrain regional advisor will be able to advise you on the best qualification for you. There are a wide range of possibilities from introductory level qualifications through to senior management including National Certificates and Diplomas.
All these qualifications are registered on the National Qualifications Framework managed by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and are both nationally and internationally recognised.
In addition, Roading New Zealand members train staff using relevant short courses on specific activities not linked to national qualifications. Check with either the NZ Institute of Highway Technology or Tai Poutini Polytechnic to find out more about some of these courses.
