Training

The role of the Training Committee is to provide opportunities and encouragement for Roading New Zealand industry members to be a highly skilled and productive workforce in land transport infrastructure, construction and maintenance.

The committee’s goal is to ensure that effective core training is available to industry, in the areas of operations, supervision, technical and senior management, thereby attracting and retaining the right people to the industry. This will result in a sustainable industry with strong career opportunities and social values.

The committee has worked closely with InfraTrain, the industry’s ITO, to ensure the development and delivery of improved training resources and assessor guides for a wide range of unit standards.

Because of constantly changing demands within the industry and the quest to achieve the best value in staff development, much effort has been made recently to assess current and future training needs and how to structure them. A Training Summit facilitated by RNZ provided valuable input for the development of an Industry Training Plan.

Work is also underway to improve the Training Advisory Group structures, in order to encourage more strategic thinking and an enhanced interface between the industry and the provision of training. More focus is also being placed on delivery of practical and focussed short course training, rather than only focussing on the attainment of qualifications.
