Robert's 'done good' down under!

Robert Whitfield (MICE, East Midlands region) is a civil engineer who'd thought for a long time about moving to New Zealand to experience life and work overseas.

Prompted by a friend from Derby who had already gone, together with TV programmes such as Billy Connolly's Tour of NZ that showed him something of the beautiful country, Robert went onto the Internet and found the careers site of Fulton Hogan Ltd, a major NZ infrastructure contractor (via Roading New Zealand's employment page).

Further exploration led Robert and his family to the Opportunities NZ expo held at Earl's Court, where he was interviewed by a General Manager from Fulton Hogan. As a Piling and Ground improvements manager with Roger Bullivant he had qualifications that New Zealand needed.

After inviting Robert and his wife for an initial holiday and further interviews in Auckland, Fulton Hogan helped them to move to New Zealand. The reconnaissance trip convinced them they could fit in and live happily in New Zealand.

The move has made a huge difference to Robert's life. He gets to work on extremely interesting and challenging engineering projects out in the bush and says, "The blue skies and greenery are a far cry from the grey skies and smog of cities where I used to work!"

New Zealand currently has a massive roading programme stretching years into the future and a number of major contractors are actively seeking skilled staff from the UK. This is being coordinated by Roading New Zealand, the industry body whose members currently contract and/or build and maintain up to 90 percent of central government roading work and around 70 percent of local authority work. Their members employ around 9,500 people and have a combined turnover of approximately NZ$3 billion.
